TMT remembers Wellington Omoragbon

TMT was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Omoragbon Wellington, a respected Director of Federal Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a valued partner in efforts to strengthen fisheries governance across the West Africa.
Through our work with the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), we knew Mr Wellington as a strong champion of regional cooperation and as someone willing to turn commitments into action.
This was particularly evident in his support for the FCWC Regional Record of Authorised Fishing Vessels. Recognising its potential to strengthen regional transparency and reduce opportunities for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, he supported Nigeria in taking the bold step of piloting the approach.
As Chair of the FCWC Advisory and Coordinating Committee, his leadership also helped steer regional cooperation and maintain momentum behind shared commitments to stronger fisheries governance.
His passing is a great loss to Nigeria and the wider West African fisheries community. TMT extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
As the Regional Record continues to develop, we hope it will form part of Mr Wellingtons' lasting legacy as a practical expression of the regional cooperation he championed.
